Alliums, Dandelions and Logo design

Alliums provided the stimulus for my first journey into digital art and the starting point for my exploration of the techniques that would be developed into my design style. Designing anything is an iterative journey, with steps forward, pauses for review and often steps backwards. This constant evaluation and development is what makes art and design so enjoyable, slow , frustrating and rewarding all at the same time. It is a journey that has a moving destination – the designs or artwork you present come from only a brief resting place on your journey.

I love Alliums and Echinops and Dandelion clocks –that ‘sputnik-like’ structure is such a beautifully engineered sculpture. I aimed to capture it in a mathematical, precise style. The result was a set of designs through which I also began to develop my colour palette. (see here for other posts about how I develop colour pallettes)

I wanted to incorporate one of these flowers into my logo design so I slotted it into the lettering. When i designed the ampersand for the ‘and’, I realised it could also feature the allium design and become a stand- alone motif. It works well in an Instagram profile image, the favicon when you search my web page and anywhere else where the full logo is the wrong shape.

It is a design I think I will revisit and incorporate into more of my work in future. At the moment I don’t know where or how, but at some point somewhere in a design I am sure there will be the perfect moment!
